There are several betting options available in the game live roulette.  The roulette layout consists of 48 boxes, one for each of the thirty-seven numbers and eleven boxes around there perimeter.  Each of the “number” boxes is colored red, black, or green to match the color of that particular number on the roulette wheel.  The boxes that surround the numbered boxes are for special bets, like Red or Black, Odd or Even, and Low or High.  Bets that are placed on specific numbered boxes, or groups of numbered boxes, are called “inside bets”, and those that are placed on the perimeter boxes are called “outside bets”.

Payouts on the outside bets are even money for Even/Odd, Red/Black, and Low/High, and they pay two to one on the Dozen or Column bets.  The inside bets can range from five-to-one on a six number bet and thirty five-to-one on a single number bet.

When wagering in live roulette you will find that there are two types of bets that you can place, “combination bets” and “straight bets”.   As the names imply, the combination bet is one that is placed on a single or group of “numbered boxes”.  The straight bet is one that is placed on one of the boxes outside of the numbered boxes.

Remember that there is not much that you can do to increase your chances to win at live roulette.  The house edge will always be around 2.7% (except in American roulette, where it is 5.26%).   It is a random game, and the chances for ending up on any particular number is always the same- 36 to 1.

First of all, placing wagers on the outside bets of a live roulette table can make the probability of winning higher.  You will have a much better chance to win an even money bet, like red or black, than you would if you were to place you wager on a single number.  Of course the payout isn’t as high, but you will win more often.

It is also a good idea to look for casinos that allow “surrender” or “en prison” rules.  This rule only applies to outside, even money bets at a live roulette table.  If the winning number is zero (or double zero in the US), then your bet is “imprisoned” through the next spin.   You cannot move the bet to another spot on the table, nor can you remove it.  When the ball is spun again and the winning number is announced, if the ball lands on your color, then you win as normal.  If not, then the bet is removed from the table and belongs to the house.  “Surrender” actually cuts the house edge in half, down to 1.35%, so not all casinos are eager to implement this rule.

One of the systems that seems to work well with live roulette is the Martingale System.   This also works  well with outside bets, but not so well on inside bets.  After placing your wager on an outside bet, if you win, then take your winnings and continue playing with your original bet.  If you lose, then bet on the same spot but double your wager.  You keep doing this until you win.  Although you should be able to get your money back at some point, this system really is set up so that you are playing not to win but to recoup all of your loses.

There are some drawbacks to the Martingale System that you need to be aware of before you decide to try it.  With this system, if there is an extended losing streak, you could reach a point where you exceed the table limits for the maximum wagers.  When this happens, it will become impossible to get back all of your loses on a single wager.  This system works best with an unlimited bank roll and where the casino has no maximum bet at the table.

The first thing to understand is that you can’t improve the odds in live roulette.  The house edge is 2.7%, and very little in the game can change that.  There are a couple of exceptions to that rule, like “surrender” or the “quint bet”, which is only possible on a wheel with a double zero.    While “surrender” can be beneficial to the player by cutting the odds for the house in half, the “quint bet”  should be avoided at all costs.

When betting on the outside line bets, like red/black, low (1-18)/high (19-36), or even/odd, then the bank will pay even money on a winning spot.  If the winning the number is green, then all of the “even money” bets are lost unless you are playing in a casino that offers surrender.  With a winning bet on the “down” (1 through 12, 13 through 24, or 25 through 36) or on the column, then the bank will payout two to one.

Some live roulette tables in the UK will allow you to split up your inside bets to meet the minimum required bet, but you will never be allowed to split the outside bets.  This would mean that with a €5 minimum bet posted, you could split up your inside bets to five €1 bets, or a €2 and €3 bet.  If you decide that you want to place an outside bet, each bet will need to be at least €5 to meet the minimum.

The roulette wheel is divided into 37 sections, which are numbered 1 to 36.  Half of these numbers are red and half are black, half are odd and half are even.  There is also a section on the wheel for a zero, which is colored green.  Most casinos in the UK and Europe offer live roulette with a single zero, while roulette in the US has the addition of a double zero, which is also green in color.  This extra zero increases the odds in favor of the house by almost double.
